W&J Lions Club chapter planning charter night

The new Washington & Jefferson College Lions Club chapter will hold its charter night at 6 p.m. May 4 in the Rossin Campus Center.

The club has 50 members, and in honor of the event, Washington Mayor Sonny Spossey has declared the day Washington & Jefferson College Lions Club Day in the city.

A seven-member team worked on establishing this club, and David Carroll of Bentleyville will be its first club president. Carroll was involved with the Bentworth Leo Club and had been among those nominated as Leo of the year for Lions International.

Nearly 100 children took part in the first Easter Bunny Breakfast sponsored by the Washington Kiwanis Club last weekend. The club elected to hold a breakfast this year instead of its annual Easter egg hunt in Washington Park.

Zonta's 20th annual Amelia Earhart Award Dinner honored the following students: Amber Doerr, Peters Township; Brittany Brandenburg, Avella; Laura Molesky, Bentworth; Kathryn Dlugos, Bishop Canevin; Nicole Lin Kramer, Burgettstown; Lauren Turosik, California Area; Dana DeSafey, Canon-McMillan; Alyssa Helster, Charleroi; Rebecca Mobley, Chartiers-Houston; Kelsey Cloonan, Fort Cherry; Julianna Popivchak, McGuffey; Chantelle Bellavance, Ringgold; Lindsey Kudaroski, Trinity, and Sarah Boice, Washington. In addition, Amanda Saeder of Beth-Center received the 2009 Exemplary Service Award for volunteerism.

The Rotary clubs annual Trivia Contest brought out the trivia buffs. Once again, Citizens Library team took first place, followed by the Observer-Reporter's What's Up With That team, and Books for the World in third. The event raised $4,650 with $1,000 going to the library.

The annual Koeze nut sale by the Washington Lions Club has given them a $21,306 profit.

Sharing the lemonade stand this year for the Farmers Market in Washington will be the Washington Kiwanis and Lions clubs. The clubs will rotate sponsorship of the stand and share in the proceeds, which they use for charitable causes.
