Friedman still in pursuit of Olympic spot

This article has been read 1134 times.

Mike Friedman will have to wait until July to learn if he's headed for Beijing with the United States Olympic track cycling team.

A 2001 graduate of Peters Township High School, Friedman was in Covina, Calif., Sunday and Monday trying to earn a spot for the Beijing Games. He was one of four cyclists from USA Cycling's Olympic talent pool competing in an invitation-only event for one spot on the team in the points and Madison events.

Friedman competed in a 3,000-meter mass start time trial. Riders had to complete the first 500 meters in 31.12 and finish in less than 3:25.42 to meet the selection criteria. Bobby Lea of Easton, Md., gained the automatic nomination with times of 29.525 over the first 500 meters and 3:17.648 overall.

Friedman placed second in 30.359 and 3:24.229.

Only three spots on the track cycling team are filled. The remainder of the squad will be chosen by discretionary nomination. One thing working in Friedman's favor is his World Cup scratch race win in Beijing in December, although the scratch race is not an Olympic event.

The remainder of the team will be announced July 1.
