Show your stuff vs. pros

This article has been read 456 times.

So you're a decent golfer, at least when you and your buddies play a weekend round.

How do you think you'd stack up against the pros?

This might be your chance to show your stuff.

You've probably heard that the Mylan Classic is coming to Southpointe Golf Club Sept. 1-4 as part of the PGA Nationwide Tour. And you may be aware that the tournament is preceded by a pro-am event, putting pros into groups with people just like you.

The Observer-Reporter wants you to be that guy. Or gal.

We're holding a contest for one lucky golfer to participate in the Aug. 31 pro-am. If that piques your interest, get ready to write: Similar to last year, we're asking you to submit a brief essay (500 words tops) on - you've guessed it - "Why I want to play in the Pro-Am at the Mylan Classic."

Keep an eye on the newspaper and on our website, www.observer-reporter.com, for more specifics about entering. But I can tell you at this point to have your essays ready to go by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, which is the deadline.

The winner will be selected the following day, and he or she will have until 1:15 p.m. the following Wednesday to get ready to tee off.

Last year's winner was John Garber, a physical education teacher at Waynesburg Central Elementary School, whose fivesome included Dickey Pride. A pro since 1992, Pride can lay claim to making 365 PGA starts and 98 on the Nationwide Tour, with career earnings of nearly $4 million.

As for Garber, he had fun putting his 7 handicap on display at Southpointe, and he told us he's had some fine players come up through the Waynesburg system.

In the news recently, for example, was Rachel Rohanna, an Ohio State University student who qualified for the U.S. Women's Open this year. The 20-year-old actually was tied for sixth at even par when bad weather suspended play on the tournament's first day in July.

Perhaps she'll play on the professional side of future pro-ams.

In the meantime, among the pros scheduled to play at the Mylan Classic is another local product, Washington's Steve Wheatcroft, who made a name for himself recently at the Nationwide Tour event in College Park, Md.

The 33-year-old did it in style, shooting an 11-under 60 in the second round to break the course record, and by finishing a total of 29 under and beating the field by 12 shots, both Nationwide records.

Whew. Think you have the stuff to keep up with that?

Through the Observer-Reporter, maybe you'll have an opportunity to find out.
