Let college use parking garage

This article has been read 329 times.

As a resident of the city of Washington, I find it unconscionable that our mayor has not explored other options that might in some way reduce the burden that will be placed, once again, on the tax-paying citizens of this city, as well as visitors that just might think twice about stopping for a coffee or lunch. If our mayor will take note, and spend some time actually visiting his neighborhoods, he might realize that there is a huge parking problem that is created right in his own city. The problem is one, in fact, created by our esteemed local college, W&J. It seems that many Saturday afternoons, as well as most summer days, the people that visit and use Cameron Stadium have no issue with parking on the city streets, namely Park, Dewey and Acheson. In the 10 years that I have lived in this neighborhood, I have seen no fewer than a handful of tickets passed out to cars that are parked illegally, namely in front of fire hydrants, in the middle of intersections and beside stop signs. Why, might one ask, is the city not benefiting from the ignorance of local traffic laws? Well, according to a local law enforcement officer, the ticketing of cars during a function at Cameron Stadium is frowned upon since W&J has generously donated funds to the city's fire and police departments. Well, I have a solution to the lack of enforcement in light of the mayor's kowtowing to the college. Since the parking garage on Franklin is nearly empty on a daily basis and the bond will be up here soon, why not rent the garage to W&J on game days, maybe even at a reduced price, and have W&J bear the burden of busing the fans to the stadium at their expense so that my children can feel free to cross the street to the park on Dewey without fearing for their lives? If not for the benefit of the safety of those who live and play in this neighborhood, maybe the city and its residents will benefit from a relationship that has been lopsided for far too long. This woman must be dreaming. The people in this city will not park at a garage that is that far away even if the college busses them. Also I would like these people complaining about paying for parking to tell me what cities in this country do NOT charge for parking. I have traveled extensively and find that I have to pay dearly for parking. Just go to Pittsburgh for Dr. appointments, Mt. Lebanon, anywhere around and you pay. I know I do. The people in the city of Washington are nothing but a bunch of complainers. If they would put their efforts in trying to help our city instead of complaining you all would have a better city. It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback.

Tired of complainers

Tired of complainers : 11/9/2009
The point I believe she was trying to make is those who invest very little (taxes) seem to get what they want and do what they want. The people of Washington are not complainers, and that’s the biggest problem with Washington, there are not enough people voicing their concerns. City officials routinely ignore the request of the citizens. Too many of the residents have just become too passive. More people need to raise the concerns about what is happening in and around their neighborhoods. That is what this woman was doing, but you tagged her as a complainer. She didn’t just make a complaint, she offered a solution, which probably isn’t a workable one, but at least she offered one.

W&J Game Parking : 11/16/2009
Dewey Dangerous and over Crowded During Games

Cameron Stadium Parking : 11/16/2009
The poster is correct, Dewey avenue during Games at the stadium is nearly impassable! Cars are parked against every stop sign, driveway, street corner and are always parked facing traffic which as I remember is against the PA vehicle code. As a resident on Dewey ave I would like to see this stop! I could care less where the fans park as long as it is in a legal fashion. It is not fair to the residents of this street to have to put up with this. I agree the parking garage idea would not work because people are just lazy these days, but maybe temporary NO PARKING SIGNS on game days would prevent the lawlessness of the fans and make them respect our neighborhoods.

Let the College build their own Parking Garage and then Tax them on it, since we dont tax any of their other property.
