Playing the victim
Career politicians such as Bill DeWeese rely on their constituents having short political memories. He is now blaming Gov. Corbett and calling his conviction a "witch hunt." I will remind you, when Corbett was our attorney general, residents of our commonwealth were demanding a cleanup in Harrisburg.

DeWeese did much for Greensboro
This is a letter to speak for the Democrats of Greensboro who put their names on Bill DeWeese's petition and support him. My name was No.1 on the petition, and I was proud to put my name there.

Why a banon smoking makes sense
This is in response to the letter, "Ban on smoking attacks freedom," published in the Observer-Reporter Feb.18. The letter by a resident of public housing voiced opposition to the impending ban on smoking in Washington County Housing Authority properties beginning in March. The writer states residents in public housing will be required to sign an "addendum" and comply with the smoking ban or risk termination of their leases, and feels this is "an infringement on the freedoms of those residing in the WCHA properties."

Ringgold school plan not logical
As a resident with three children in this Ringgold School District, I am deeply concerned about the path the current school board has chosen. I can't find, anywhere, an explanation as to why the school board is ignoring the fact that the structural engineers have put their name on the line, literally, by signing a letter that clearly says the current middle school is "structurally safe." The taxpayers of this district deserve an explanation for this.

Caution: Line jumpers
On Thursday, we stood out in the rain for 2 and a half hours to receive food from the Food Bank, and we appreciate whatever we get. There were about 30 baskets in front of us and a little more behind us. That was until they started giving the food out, and then about 10 people came with baskets of there own and stood in front of us and other people, which seems to me to be line jumping, which is unfair to all who had been waiting for so long.

Let the dogs in
I love animals - cats, dogs, whatever. I have three cats of the indoor-only type. My welcome home includes figure eights between my feet. What I can't understand is how others in my neighborhood seem to think I want to hear their pets yipping and barking all through the night.

Outstanding coach wasn't mentioned
In the Observer-Reporter on Feb. 7 in the sports section, there was a glaring omission from the list of outstanding Wash High wrestling coaches.

Ordinance would hurt businesses
In the last year in Peters Township, there has been a big controversy over a proposed crematory. A group of township residents has opposed this. The latest tactic they are trying to persuade council to use is the creation of an air quality control regulation. There are many rumors concerning this project.

MOST RECENTLY COMMENTED
Authorities' work should top agenda
Greene County will soon become the beneficiary of money, albeit in comparatively modest amounts, generated by the impact fee imposed on corporations exploiting the natural gas reserves of the Marcellus Shale formation. Of course, the county will have to formally adopt the imposition of the fee within its borders, but let us agree that this point of order is academic since an ill-advised decision to the contrary would be overridden by Greene's municipal governments.

Once it's gone ...
I was reading about the Washington School Board's possibility of dropping the wrestling program. Down through the years, I knew how strong Wash High's wrestling was. They kept me from winning the WPIAL, and I was on the losing end of a few dual meets.

U.S. is not a Christian nation
To those who are of the misconception that the United States was founded on Christian principles and is a "Christian nation," they need to read the history of the founding of our country and study the people who wrote our founding documents.

Ban on smoking attacks freedom
The Washington County Housing Authority is making public housing non-smoking as of March 1. Being residents of public housing, we are wondering what other rights they will want to take from us?

Make announcements separate but equal
The paucity of responses to your recent publication of a homosexual "engagement" announcement led me to think that either people really don't care about this issue or that they just think it's perfectly fine and needs no further comment. I'm writing at this time to decry this expression of human relationships.

On Ike memorial
I beg to disagree with your Feb. 14 editorial approving of using Frank Gehry's design of a barefoot boy from Kansas as the memorial design for President Eisenhower, citing inspiration to visitors as the reason.

Sweet story sparks memories
Reading the article about tapping maple trees ("Sweet success," Feb. 12) reminded me of something. As a kid growing up in the early 1940s, my best friend, Dave Williams, had a book called "The Boy Mechanic."

Stepping up in time of need
Last week, Southwest Regional Medical Center experienced a significant amount of flooding across the second and, subsequently, first floor of the hospital. The flood was caused by a pipe located near our emergency department and we were ultimately forced to call a Code Black. which is called anytime we are in a situation that warrants EMS and ambulance providers to divert patients from our emergency department to another facility.
