McMURRAY - Two people accused of stealing purses and robbing an elderly woman outside a grocery store had their cases in one township waived to trial Wednesday morning.

Kimberly Ann Sobczak, 38, of 157 First Ave., New Eagle, and Jason R. Weyandt, 35, who gave his mother's address in North Franklin Township, appeared before District Judge James Ellis on charges filed by Peters Township police.

They also face similar charges for incidents in South Strabane Township and Mt. Lebanon, Allegheny County.

In Peters Township, the pair are accused of stealing purses from shoppers at the Giant Eagle, Donaldsons Crossroads shopping center, on Aug. 20 and 30 and Sept. 13.

During the two days in August, police said Sobczak stole purses from shopping carts.

On Sept. 13, she is accused of robbing an elderly Upper St. Clair Township woman as the woman sat in her car in the store's parking lot.

Weyandt is accused of being the getaway driver. During the Sept. 13 robbery, police said the pair fled on a motorcycle.

In the Peters Township incidents, Sobczak is charged with robbery, theft and conspiracy to commit robbery and theft. Weyandt is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and theft.

Following the preliminary hearing Wednesday, both remain in Washington County Jail, including Weyandt who is being held on a domestic relations warrant.

Charges also were filed by South Strabane Township police for similar purse thefts that police said occurred in late August. Five days later, a woman at the Giant Eagle, Strabane Square, had her purse stolen.

On Sept. 13, an elderly woman had her purse stolen when confronted by a Sobczak in the parking lot, police said.

The pair had a preliminary hearing before District Judge Jay Weller in late September where they waived charges of theft and criminal conspiracy.

Weyandt and Sobczak also face similar charges through Mt. Lebanon police. Police said the pair are suspected in incidents at the Giant Eagle grocery store in the Virginia Manor shopping center during the same time period as the Washington County purse incidents.

A call to Mt. Lebanon police Lt. Aaron Lauth Wednesday was not returned.
