Two women were arrested Thursday morning by South Strabane Township police after they were reportedly caught stealing items from stores and then returning them for gift cards.

Tina Marie Welch, 37, of 181 S. California Drive, Coal Center, and Christine Misanik, 36, of 315 Seventh Ave., New Eagle, were taken into custody at Tanger Outlets.

Police said Misanik went into the Calvin Klein store at the outlets and took two dresses into the dressing room. When she came out, Misanik reportedly told a clerk that the dresses did not fit and left the store.

The clerk checked the dressing room and found only one dress. A security tag that had been on the other dress was on the floor.

A short time later, police said, Welch tried to return the dress that had been stolen but was turned away. Police were notified. The clerk pointed out Welch and Misanik to police as they walked past the store.

When stopped by police, Welch handed over the dress along with two pairs of underpants. She also had a Timberland gift card that the pair allegedly received after returning stolen merchandise.

Misanik had a large purse containing stolen items, including two hats from Timberland, Tanger Outlets, police said. She also had gift cards from JC Penney and Gabriel Brothers, apparently received from returning stolen items, police said.

Welch told police they could sell the gift cards for about 50 cents on the dollar.

Both women were arraigned before District Judge Jay Weller. Welch, who is charged with receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia, was placed in Washington County Jail on $5,000 bond. Misanik, who is charged with two counts of felony retail theft, possessing instruments of a crime, criminal conspiracy and receiving stolen property, was placed in jail on $10,000 bond.

Misanik also was arraigned Tuesday before Weller on charges of retail theft, criminal conspiracy and receiving stolen property. South Strabane police said she was the getaway driver when an accomplice stole a carpet cleaner from Wal-Mart on May 7. She was returned to jail on an additional $10,000 bond.

How stupid!! : 10/15/2009
People never fail to amaze me by how stupid they can be. Did they think they would get away with returning to the scene of the crime? Really. Get a job people.
