A former North Strabane Township man accused of bilking a restaurant supply company out of more than $21,500 was taken into custody last week in Allegheny County.

William H. Scherz Jr., 45, was charged by North Strabane police with three counts each of theft by deception and writing bad checks. He is accused of writing the checks totaling $21,579 to Liberty Mart, 300 Houston Square, from July 3 through 10. Scherz claimed to need the equipment for his catering company.

Detective John Wybranowski, who filed the charges against Scherz, said the checks were written on a Bank of America account in Florida.

"He tried to explain that they were in the process of moving from Florida to Pittsburgh and that his wife had closed the account," the detective said. "It sounded logical, but the account was closed in 2006."

Scherz also never contacted the company or police after the checks were returned.

Wybranowski said police learned of Scherz several years ago when he lived in the township.

"He has an extensive history," Wybranowski said.

Scherz is wanted by police in Brentwood, Fla., and Ohio. He was wanted on a parole violation stemming from charges in Florida.

He was taken into custody by Pennsylvania parole officers at a hotel in Robinson Township, Allegheny County, last week. Scherz is now being held at SCI-Pittsburgh.
