Man arrested for $21K in bad checks
William H. Scherz Jr., 45, was charged by North Strabane police with three counts each of theft by deception and writing bad checks. He is accused of writing the checks totaling $21,579 to Liberty Mart, 300 Houston Square, from July 3 through 10. Scherz claimed to need the equipment for his catering company.
Detective John Wybranowski, who filed the charges against Scherz, said the checks were written on a Bank of America account in Florida.
"He tried to explain that they were in the process of moving from Florida to Pittsburgh and that his wife had closed the account," the detective said. "It sounded logical, but the account was closed in 2006."
