No tax increase in Cumberland Township
Under the $2,453,612 spending plan, property taxes will remain at 3 mills. Supervisor Bill Groves said the budget is fairly similar to the current budget and includes no major increases or decreases in budget line items.
The township's general fund, for instance, will increase only $24,175, from $1,445,850 this year to $1,470,025 in the proposed budget. Groves did note the township will be able to save about $12,000 by changing to a new health-care provider.
The township's budget is broken down into seven funds.

On the revenue side, the township expects to receive about $340,000 from the property tax, $395,000 from the earned income tax; $25,000 from the realty transfer tax, $25,000 from the occupational privilege tax, $20,000 from the cable franchise and $30,000 from vehicle code violations.
Additional money to balance the budget will come from state sources and from carryover funds from the current year.
The township last increased property taxes in 2008, raising the tax levy from 2.44 mills to 3 mills.
In other business, the supervisors were again asked whether they could do anything to regulate natural gas drilling in the township. Charlotte Blaker, township code enforcement officer, said the township can place no restrictions on the gas drillers' activities.
Natural gas drilling is governed by state law and the township can't supersede state law, she said.
The supervisors agreed to allow the Carmichaels-Cumberland Joint Sewer Authority to participate with the township for health insurance. The agreement now applies only to one authority employee.
The supervisors agreed to close Perry Street, next to the Nemacolin fire hall, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for the Cub Scout downhill derby. The fire company will assist with traffic and provide ambulance service for the derby.
The event was originally to be held Oct. 24.
