Fires of similar origins were responsible for totally destroying a home and a large shed in two separate incidents over the weekend in West Finley Township.
West Finley Volunteer Fire Company Chief Stephen Emery said Sunday a fire at the Bryan Laberbee residence at 11:30 a.m. Saturday occurred when the family was burning paper in a burn barrel about 20 feet from their mobile home at 505 Fraction Road. According to Emery, wind blew burning paper to leaves that went beneath the trailer, setting it on fire.
Emery said Laberbee, his parents, Pete and Angela Fox, and a 3-year-old daughter were left homeless as a result of the blaze, which caused about $25,000 in damages.
Jessica Heyman of the Red Cross in Pittsburgh said the organization provided clothing and food to the family.

Emery also reported that a similar situation occurred at 12:47 p.m. Friday at the David and Marlene Lehew property on Newman Hill Road. He said paper being burned outside was blown into leaves that went beneath a large, two-story shed on the property. Emery said the resulting fire destroyed the structure and all of the equipment stored inside, including a tractor. No one was injured in the blaze, which caused about $170,000 in damages.
Emery said his fire company was assisted at both fires by firefighters from Claysville, West Alexander and Dallas, W.Va.
