City boys charged in school arson
Washington police Cpl. Jonathan Miles said Saturday that he plans to file juvenile allegations against the trio in connection with the Aug. 15 fire.
City police along with firefighters were called to the playground adjacent to the school, 111 W. Spruce St. The fire caused some of the equipment to melt.
A short time after the fire, Father William Feeney, the pastor of Immaculate Conception Church, called police to tell them the incident had been captured on a surveillance video. Miles was able to identify the boys by what they were wearing after viewing the surveillance. He also got a good look at their features.

"They had bought bags of food and used those to start," he added. "They had no reason for starting the fire. They just said it was something to do."
After seeing the video, Miles patrolled the area and saw one of the boys in a car with his grandmother.
Miles talked with two of the boys and their parents. Those two admitted their involvement and identified the third boy. At the time, the boys lived in the Highland-Locust Avenue area although one of them has since moved to another part of the city.
Miles said the delay in filing the charges was attributed to waiting for an estimate on damages. The $30,819 estimate does not include the cost for installation of the new equipment. The corporal said it is unlikely the church will be able to recoup restitution from the three boys.
Proceedings will be scheduled in juvenile court.
Accountable : 11/15/2009
I realize thesa are yong boys that did the damage, but the need to be held resonsible not their parents. Yes maybe the parents need to be made to pay for the damage cause get real they can never do it and where was the parents when the boys was getting the supplies to start a fire? But if the boys don't have to pay anything they will not learn a lesson and only do it again and next time amybe hurt someone! Suggestion no money involved make them be involved on installing the new playground by being the runners as long as they are safe. And they should be made to clean the streets and the playground for a very long time and when doing so they need to wear a sign sayong wht crime they commited amybe if you start embarassing these kids and parents they may think twice next time.

Another fine example of quality parenting in Washington?

Oh yeah and everything in 84 is great and perfect...Get off ur high horse...Things happen everywhere...
Not surprised : 11/17/2009
Why am I not surprised at this? I see stupid stuff like this happen ALL THE TIME while driving in Washington. I've actually seen with my own eyes, 2 younger boys kicking a cat back and forth. I went to get out of the car to approach them and they ran off laughing. Quality kids we have here in Washington. You better believe that when my two girls grow up to school age, we will be moving out of the area to go to a quality school district.
ARSON : 11/17/2009
The boys, ages 12,13,14! Many questions? Where did these KIDs get this kind of value? (A relitive will say, "he is such a nice boy.") TRUE family values are just about gone. I live in the sticks and there is a lot of budding jail bait here too.
Amazing : 11/17/2009
I am in no way naive enough to think that there isn't an issue with parenting or the lack there of in Washington. There are also significant amounts of inappropriate behaviors in local children, however you are kidding yourself to think that it is soley a Washington thing. Just take that into consideration when you move to this magical place where your two girls can grow up without these imperfections. As far as these young boys and their parents are concerned, our society needs to make people accountable for their actions! PERIOD!
Schools : 11/18/2009
Why are you holding schools responsible for a parents job? That's the real problem: parents giving up thier responsibilty and blaming everyone else.

WOW! I see everything is still the same....small minded people....THINGS HAPPEN EVEY WHERE! Back in the day we could go to 8th ward, 6th ward, Clark, and many other schools and well as the browons house and the lemmon center to have fun...now there is nothing for any one to do....now dont get me wrong i am not say that they did is right it was very much wrong....back in the day the neighborhood use to help out raising the kids now you have parents who have to work and tell there kids not to do this that or the other and we all no kids think they know everything..so stop saying who fault it is and start by fixing the problem
