Waynesburg Plaza Shop 'n Save to close Wednesday

WAYNESBURG - After a seven-year run, the Shop 'n Save supermarket at Waynesburg Plaza will close its doors, a victim, the owner said, of competitive pressure created by the new Walmart.

Liquidation sales have already begun; the store's last day is Wednesday.

The store is operated by Jamieson Family Markets. Tom Jamieson, company owner, said Friday that he was "extremely disappointed" by having to close the store, which he opened in January 2003.

The company has about 25 stores, and this is only the second time it has had to close a store because of competition, Jamieson said.

Jamieson said he felt bad for the store's employees.

"The Waynesburg staff has been one of the very best to work with," he said. "I feel that I failed them."

Prior to the opening of the new Walmart in Franklin Township in March, the Waynesburg Shop 'n Save employed about 80 people. Jamieson said the numbers gradually dwindled and about 50 employees now remain.

Most of the store's management staff have taken jobs at other Jamieson stores; other employees also can apply for work at other company stores, he said. The closest are in Uniontown and Morgantown, W.Va.

Jamieson attributed the closing to a drop in sales of about 30 percent that followed the opening of the Walmart. The Waynesburg market has only so many potential customers, and with the opening of the Walmart the pie was sliced ever thinner, he said.

The company leases the 45,000-square-foot store from Khoshbin Tower II LP. Jamieson said his company will be looking for a company to which it can sublease the space.

Jamieson Family Markets has stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia that include Shop 'n Save, Save-A-Lot, Everyday's A Party and Pet Supplies Plus.

The company was one of the first to move into Waynesburg Plaza after it was purchased by a new owner and partially rebuilt in 2002.

The plaza was constructed in 1972 by the Koratich family of Waynesburg and opened the following year with Fisher's Big Wheel and a Shop 'n Save, then operated by a different owner, as the main tenants.

In the mid-1980s, the Shop 'n Save moved to Greene Plaza, and in 1994 Fisher's Big Wheel shut its doors. The Shop 'n Save at Greene Plaza closed in early 2002.

Waynesburg Plaza sat nearly vacant for about seven years before it was purchased for $800,000 by The Widewater Group of Syracuse, N.Y., in January 2002.

Widewater rebuilt part of the plaza and renovated the rest before reopening it in 2003. It sold the plaza in 2007 to Khoshbin, a real estate company based in Irvine, Calif., for $4.5 million.

Store Closing : 11/21/2009
I seriously don't think that Walmart is to blame for the closing of this store. I blame poor management. So many times I went into that store to make purchases and waited in line of a very long time because they only saw fit to have one register open. I think it was a mistake to make the store a party supply place. I never saw anyone buy that stuff. I honestly think the Waynesburg store was supplied with stuff the other stores couldn't sell. This store was in trouble way before Walmart ever came to town. So serisouly stop blaming others for your poor management.

agree!! : 11/21/2009

what is the deal of people blaming walmart for eveything we needed a walmart in our town at least we all can afford to shop at walmart unlike some of stores uptown which is way to costly it is not walmarts fault you are closing and if you really wanted to stay open you would have made some changes and stayed open and just a bit of advice maybe shop n save should consider those self cash out things like home depot has cause then maybe you would not have so many customers waiting and waiting to cash out

Here, here! : 11/21/2009
I would go in for the bakery items (best bakery of all the local stores), but would get frustrated after standing in line 15 minutes or more to purchase one or two items. Could never make a "quick trip" to Shop n' Save. And then there's the "odor" that still existed since the renovation. Yes, those things are not the fault of Wal-Mart.

I believe Walmart was the greatest reason for this store closing. If we do not keep our downtowns and our local businesses viable and spend most o f our dollars at Wal Mart, expect many more small businesses to close.

I agree with the other comment. The checkout lines were a problem from the very beginning, and the attitude of management toward customers' comments was not welcoming. I don't think this can be laid at Wal-Mart's door; the Giant Eagle seems to be doing very well.

high prices : 11/21/2009
I think the high prices drove people to walmart...i tried on several occasions to shop at shop-n-save and found their prices way to high.

Why blame WalMart? : 11/21/2009
Shop and Save would still be in business if they had proper management, friendly staff and didn't have higher prices. I never shopped there, I always shopped at GE. I shop now at Wal Mart cause it saves moeny.

Be reasonable, Wal-Mart is not the issue here. Free enterprise is an option to all. Longtime Waynesburgers will remember the Howards markets, they went by the wyside with the "Supermarket" called Foodland. Foodland's now gone also. If you don't lke Wal-Mart, don't shop there. If you don't like the free enterprise system, move to another country!

Walmart : 11/21/2009
The Shop N Save in Waynesburg is closing because of it's poor business habits not because of Walmart. This store was dying long before Walmart ever even opened. I stopped shopping there because of the long lines and only 1 register opened. I also stopped shopping there because as soon as you walked in the door there was a foul oder that came from somewhere in the produce department. It smelled terrible. This store was just a low end store for the corporation that owns it. I am sure that there other stores didn't look as bad as this one did.

I know Wal-Mart is the reason for the store closing. Why would you want to shop at a store where there are only one or two checkouts open. And in the evening you had to listen to the floor scrubber and polisher while you shopped. While the store may have had other items that were not available at some other grocery stores, I don't believe the need for them was as great as the owners had anticipated. And while it is hard for employes to face losing their jobs at this time of the year, customers or the lack thereof are not the reason for the closing. And if you want Walmart to stay open, then you had better patronize it also. Since the lack of any other stores on that hill only provides for one wanting to go to Wal-Mart, they need your help. McHolmes Development and the County Commissioners really botched this deal. We need another developer to step in and take over the project, if there is to be any progress there.

Almost all the time a store will close if that store does not meet its customers' needs of the right product at the right price with the right service. It's always easier and sometimes politically expedient to blame the other guy for you going out of business. If you do your job for your customers, you will succeed unless there are external factors like government interference. Maybe this store closing will expedite the soon coming 1998 Morrisville widening project for Route 19/21. At least the right of way acquisition will be cheaper.

Walmart? Walmart? There's a Walmart in Waynesburg? Where is it? There are no signs for a Walmart Along Rt 21 and the interstate can be seen signs for several motels, fast food restaurants, and other businesses but there is nothing to let people know there is a Walmart. The local citizenry who are privvy to Walmart's existence here are not enough customers, nor do we have enough purchasing power (money) to sustain it. If some outside customers can't be drawn to this Walmart, it, too, will be closing. Then what? So far, has Walmart lived up to its promises of a certain number of sustainable jobs for this area? Have they already laid off workers? Compared to other Walmart stores, this one has very limited choices and is slow to replace stock. How hard are they trying to make this store succeed? Will it be just a big tax write-off for the owners when they close it? Think about it.

Closing of S&S : 11/22/2009
I believe the closing of the store is partially the workers attitudes, owners neglect of things (expired items) and let's face it, this county is not a rich one. We have more supermarkets, drug stores and dollar stores in this area than any other place. We are not a booming county by any means. When we get something here the people can relate to, it closes. We travel out of town for things because we cannot get them here, well the Walmart does not have a lot of items and we still need to go out of town, but not as much. We need for people to understand this county cannot sustain so many businesses and we need to take care of our county resident's that own businesses here. Giant Eagle has changed its stock items for whatever reason. S&S had some items nobody else carried and I will have to go out of town now for them. How many stores do people think we can keep open here?

what can we do?

store closing : 11/22/2009
I stopped going to shop 'n' saves when Giant Eagle offered fuel perks, which saves me about 10 bucks a month in gas, and their advantage card, which saves a bunch of money on everyday purchases. even with the walmart, I still buy groceries at giant eagle.

Perhaps the other stores should learn a lesson here. Walmart is here, and it is less expensive, and there are a lot of check outs. The employees are friendly, and the store itself is well lit, clean and well stocked. I think the other stores in the area took advantage of the Waynesburg residents for too long. Now we have a choice with Aldi's and Walmart. We were at GE and S&S mercy for a long time. Now it is time for Wbg residents to have good choices and we are making those choices. Too bad the other stores choose to take advantage of us for so long, now they are paying the price.M

Yes,Walmart does exist : 11/23/2009
I can't believe someone doesn't know about the Walmart, Boy where have you been??? Everytime I am at WalMart, the parking lot has many cars!! You need to get out once in a while! Believe me Walmart is in business to make money not loose it, and I personally have never seen a Walmart fail. You really need to get out and about to see the only time they close a store is to build a bigger one. I am soo tired of these negitive people putting down Walmart. IT IS HERE TO STAY, so get over it and move on.

Rude : 11/23/2009
I stopped shopping here a few years ago. They were understaffed for one. And the staff that was there was the rudest I have ever met. Plus, the smell that hit me when I would walk in there was aweful!
