Basketball teams scrambling to finish

The Charleroi High School girls basketball team wrapped up a spot in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs before the start of February. These days, like so many other teams anticipating the postseason, the Cougars are wondering when they'll next step on a basketball court.

Charleroi's Section 5-AA game at Burgettstown was postponed Monday, as was the rest of the local scholastic sports schedule. No make-up has been announced.

The Cougars (7-3 section, 11-5 overall) have one scheduled game remaining against Washington on Thursday. Three others, including the Burgettstown game, don't have make-up dates.

"I have no idea when we're supposed to play at this point," Charleroi coach Nick Mahalko said Monday night. "I imagine the exhibition games will be thrown out."

Charleroi hasn't practiced since last Tuesday and its last game was a 49-34 non-section loss against Yough. Last Thursday, the Cougars couldn't practice because the WPIAL team wrestling semifinals were hosted by Charleroi.

It's not exactly how the Cougars envisioned their drive to the WPIAL playoffs.

"I would imagine everybody is going through the same thing," Mahalko said. "Actually, it might end up helping us. We had strept throat go through the team."

WPIAL basketball teams can play regular season games until Monday, Feb. 15 and the playoff pairings meeting is the following day. The playoffs are scheduled to start Feb. 19 or 20.

Most teams only have one or two section games remaining but several, like the Charleroi girls, have several.

"We were supposed to play Yough next Monday, and Carlynton never returned any of our phone calls. That game was from December," Mahalko said.

The Trinity boys also have five games left on the schedule, including two key contests in Section 5-AAA as the Hillers attempt to win their first title since 1987.

Today's home game against Belle Vernon has been moved to Thursday in place of a non-section game against South Side Beaver. The game against Elizabeth Forward, scheduled for last Friday, is slotted for Wednesday.

"We sat around for most of (Monday) and figured it out. It was either that or eat," Hillers coach Joe Dunn joked.

As for the remaining non-section games, Trinity plans to play South Park next Monday but Saturday's appearance in the Don Graham Classic at North Catholic High School against Ellwood City is "questionable" according to Dunn.

"I really can't remember an end-of-season scramble like this," Dunn added. "This happens every so often when you're trying to get some late-season exhibition games in but not section games."
