High school football Week 9: Devils earn trip to postseason

Dylan Bongiorni threw a pair of touchdown passes as Burgettstown got the victory it needed, 21-13 over visiting Avella Friday night.

The win, combined with Fort Cherry's double-overtime victory over Chartiers-Houston, clinched the fourth playoff spot from the Black Hills Conference for Burgettstown.

Bongiorni threw TD passes to Andrew Todd and Zach Schillinski as the Blue Devils ran their record to 3-4 in the conference and 4-5 overall. Burgettstown gets the playoff spot based on tiebreakers over Char-Houston and Frazier, who also finish at 3-4 in conference play.

A.J. Roner gained 87 yards on 20 carries and scored on an eight-yard touchdown run for the Blue Devils.

Jefferson-Morgan 42, Mapletown 8

Ryan Knight had 22 carries for 218 yards and four touchdowns as playoff-bound Jefferson-Morgan wrapped up its regular season with a 42-8 win over Mapletown in a Tri-County South game at Parker Field.

Knight scored three of his touchdowns in the second quarter as Jefferson-Morgan (5-2, 7-2) scored 28 unanswered points after a scoreless first quarter.

Brent Moskola added a three-yard touchdown run, while Chris Shaw scored from 32 yards out, for the Rockets, who held a 318-45 advantage in rushing yards.

Jarrett Porterfield, the WPIAL's leading receiver coming into the game, caught three passes for 99 yards, including a 78-yard TD pass from Cory Minnick in the fourth quarter for the Maples (1-6, 1-8). Minnick completed six-of-21 passes for 117 yards.

Jesse Milliken and Josh Shinkovec had interceptions for the Rockets.

Monessen 50, California 21

Terrance Stepoli completed 11-of-13 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for two scores as Tri-County South champion Monessen routed California, 50-21.

Brett Crenshaw added three touchdown runs, while Nick Bolias had an 80-yard kickoff return and a receiving touchdown for the Greyhounds (7-0, 7-2). Bolias finished with five receptions for 102 yards.

D.J. Martinak was 10 of 22 for 156 yards with two touchdown passes for California (3-4, 4-5), which needed a victory to clinch the fourth playoff spot out of the Tri-County South.

Beth-Center 50, Geibel 7

Jake Sofran had 15 carries for 74 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Beth-Center tuned up for the playoffs with a 50-7 rout of Geibel in a Tri-County South game in Connellsville.

The Bulldogs (6-1, 7-2), who are the second seed out of the conference, also scored a pair of special teams touchdowns, one of a 36-yard punt return by Chuck Bowser, the other on a 25-yard return of a blocked punt by Frank Vorhees.

DeShan Brown, Sal Faieta and Buddy Blackburn also scored for the Bulldogs.

Geibel (2-5, 3-6) had just 88 total yards.

Waynesburg 29, Brownsville 19

Running back John Sinnott rushed for four touchdowns and Waynesburg held off a late charge by visiting Brownsville as the Raiders pull out a 29-19 victory in the Interstate Conference.

Sinnott had huge game, rushing for 207 yards on 23 carries. He scored on runs of two, six, 61 and 27 yards.

Waynesburg finished conference play with a 3-6 record. Brownsville is 1-9.

Sinnott scored two touchdowns in a span of 59 seconds in the first quarter. His 61-yard jaunt early in the second quarter opened up a 21-0 lead for the Raiders.

Brownsville battled back and closed to within 21-13 early in the fourth quarter. Mike DeCarlo scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter, and his 26-yard TD pass to Brandon Franks cut the gap to eight with 8:37 remaining.

Waynesburg, however, went back to Sinnott on the nesxt drive, and his fourth touchdown and Mark Stillwagon's two-point conversion run gave the Raiders a 29-13 advantage with only 2:52 left.

Stillwagon led Waynesburg's defense with two quarterback sacks and eight tackles.

Frazier 8, Bentworth 0

Chase Kirmeyer scored the only touchdown of the game on a two-yard run in the first quarter as Frazier downed Bentworth, 8-0, in a Black Hills Conference game.

Kirmeyer gained 115 yards on 28 carries for Frazier, which finished with a 3-6 record, including 3-4 in the conference.

James Kline ran for the two-point conversion.

Frazier ended in a three-way tie for fourth place but missed the playoffs on Gardner Points.

Bentworth fell to 2-7, including 1-6 in the conference.

In other games

Carmichaels clinched a Class A playoff berth by defeating host West Greene, 42-7, in the Tri-County South Conference. Mount Pleasant wrapped up an undefeated regular season by defeating host Charleroi 36-20 in the Class AA Interstate Conference. No details of these games were reported to the Observer-Reporter.
