Brumbaugh, Davis lead Lions over Beaver

Top-seeded South Fayette flexed its muscles in its first-round Class AA WPIAL playoff game against Beaver as Christian Brumbaugh threw three touchdown passes and Jeff Davis ran for two more in a 35-15 victory.

Brumbaugh completed 17 of 23 passes for 263 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Eric Myers and another to Ryan Ross. Ross finished with eight receptions for 110 yards.

Davis rolled up 157 yards on just 14 carries and scored on runs of 20 and 11 yards for the Lions (10-0).

Chris Williams led the South Fayette defensive effort with 13 tackles, while Dustin Lunn had an interception for the Lions, who face Aliquippa, a 27-7 winner over McGuffey Friday night, in the second round.

Sam O'Neill led Beaver (5-5) with 100 yards rushing on 18 carries. O'Neill and Steve Neely scored rushing touchdowns for Beaver.

Laurel 56, Burgettstown 7

Dylan Jones rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns to lead second-seeded Laurel to a 56-7 victory over visiting Burgettstown in a Class A first-round game.

Laurel (9-1) rushed for 337 yards. The Spartans forged a 21-0 lead by scoring two touchdowns 71 seconds apart late in the first quarter, then tacked on another 21 points in the second quarter.

Jones opened the scoring with TD runs of 11 and two yards. He also scored on an 85-yard jaunt in the third quarter that put Laurel up 49-7.

The lone touchdown came for Burgettstown (4-6) early in the third quarter when Dylan Bongiorni completed a 12-yard pass to Frank Hutchinson.

Laurel's Jake Dando caught one touchdown pass and returned a punt 58 yards for a score late in the first half to give the Spartans a 42-0 lead. Tyler Forbes threw for one score and ran for another, and Dan Poremski ran for two touchdowns.

Springdale 21, Monessen 14

Bill Arch scored his second touchdown of the game on a six-yard run with 30 seconds remaining to give Springdale a 21-14 victory over host Monessen in a Class A first-round game.

Monessen (7-3) had rallied to tie the score at 14-14 with 4:32 remaining on Terrance Stepoli's 12-yard touchdown pass to Nick Bolias and two-point conversion toss to Brett Crenshaw.

Springdale took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the Monessen 17-yard line before turning the ball over on downs with 1:36 to play. However, Springdale's Sean Dugan intercepted a Stepoli pass to set up the Dynamos' winning score.

Stepoli completed nine of 20 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. His seven-yard toss to Brady Kunsa pulled the Greyhounds to within 7-6 in the second quarter.

Arch rushed for 145 yards on 13 carries. His 13-yard TD run gave Springdale a 14-6 lead with 9:10 remaining. Dugan rushed for 111 yards on 21 carries.

In other games

In other games, Carmichaels and Jefferson-Morgan were knocked out of the Class A playoffs.

The Mikes dropped a 40-6 decision to top-seeded Rochester, while the Rockets lost to North Catholic, 38-3.
