Brentwood blanks Fort Cherry

McDONALD - Still rolling from a five-game winning streak to finish the regular season, the Brentwood Spartans beat Fort Cherry 22-0 Friday night in a Class A first-round playoff matchup.

The Spartans (6-4) will face Rochester at a neutral site next week in the quarterfinals.

Fort Cherry (7-3) was shut out for the first time this season and could not overcome injuries to four key players.

"We were up against it today," Fort Cherry head coach Tim Garry said. "The kids battled and couldn't make it up. They didn't quit. It's just too hard to replace that."

The Spartans started their first three drives from inside Fort Cherry territory, and that field-position advantage set the tone for the rest of the game.

Early in the first quarter, a botched snap to Tanner Garry, serving as the Fort Cherry punter, forced Garry to throw a quick pass to his cousin, Corey Garry. But the play fell five yards short of a first down and Brentwood took over at the Rangers' 40.

Fort Cherry's second drive netted negative yards and Garry punted again. The short punt was returned to the 22 and Brentwood was able to march to the 1-yard line. Running back Lamont Robinson pounded it in from there for a touchdown on third down.

Brentwood lined up for the extra point, but immediately changed into a spread formation. Quarterback Cory Bauer connected with receiver Danny Lucas for the two-point conversion.

Fort Cherry appeared ready to respond in the second quarter following back-to-back sacks of Bauer that stalled the Spartans' next drive. A low snap allowed Rangers defensive end Mike Silla enough time to block the punt, giving Fort Cherry excellent field position at Brentwood's 42-yard line.

The Rangers, however, were unable to do anything with the drive.

Following another punt, the Spartans drove from their own 35 in six plays to score again on a 22-yard pass from Bauer to Lucas. Roth kicked the extra point to give the Spartans a 15-0 lead at halftime.

Fort Cherry's first drive of the second half looked promising when running back Gary Kiefer ran three consecutive times for 25 yards. A pass interference penalty gave the Rangers the ball at Brentwood's 20-yard line, and it seemed as though Fort Cherry was about to get back into the game.

But the drive ended moments later when Garry threw into coverage and Chris Shortley stepped in front of the pass for an interception.

The Spartans put the game away two plays later when Bauer lofted a pass over the defense to Lucas, who sprinted 84 yards to the end zone. Lucas said he saw press coverage and motioned to Bauer to change the route.

"I didn't come in and expect that," Lucas said. "But I came in and played well, and it happened."

Lucas finished the game with 129 yards on four receptions, including two for touchdowns. Bauer completed 7 of 14 passes for 159 yards.

Garry completed 9 of 24 passes for 76 yards. Kiefer ran 16 times for 47 yards, which left him just 27 yards shy of 1,000 on the season.

Another home playoff loss to a team that FC should have beaten, due to an uninspired effort. Injuries were certainly a factor, but that team wasn't ready or up for playing, save for a few individuals. They better change that mindset or it's going to be more of the same for quite a while come November....
