The California University women's basketball team opened a double-digit lead during the second half Saturday afternoon in its home opener against Charleston (W.Va.) and held off a late rally for a 74-72 victory at Hamer Hall.

The game was a rematch of last year's game in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament. Cal won that game, 87-48 to advance to the Sweet 16.

This one looked like a blowout when the Vulcans, ranked No. 3 in Division II by USA Today, opened the second half with a spurt that turned a two-point halftime lead into a 15-point margin with 14:19 remaining.

Cal (2-0) got a game-high 23 points and four steals from Brooque Williams. Kayla Smith finished with 11 points and 16 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games, and Amy Johns chipped in with 18 points.
