The memorable season for the California University women's soccer team ended Sunday with a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Saint Rose (N.Y.) in Loudonville, N.Y., in the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships.

The 23rd-ranked Vulcans finish the year with a 19-6-1 record while the Golden Knights, who are the only undefeated and untied team in the country, advance to the semifinals and will face either Grand Valley or Colorado Mines Dec. 3 in Tampa, Fla.

Saint Rose was kept scoreless in the early minutes of the game after sophomore goalkeeper Paula Jackson made four saves on six shots during an 11-minute span. The Golden Knights eventually scored the only goal they would need in the 38th minute when Carly Pengelly scored her fourth goal of the year off an assist from Kimberly Morton.

Saint Rose outshot Cal 12-2 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Penn State edges Davidson, 59-57

Jeff Brooks scored 12 points to help Penn State hold off Davidson 59-57 Sunday in the third round of the Charleston Classic.

A jumper by Brooks with two minutes to play gave Penn State a 59-55 lead, and the Nittany Lions held on for the win despite not scoring the rest of the way.

Davidson had a chance to tie the game, but Brendan McKillop missed a jump shot from the lane and time expired in the ensuing scramble for the rebound.

Jake Cohen led Davidson (0-4) with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Penn State (2-2) led by as many as 19 points in the first half, but Davidson rallied to get within 31-22 at halftime.

The Wildcats started the game 3 for 13 from the field, including 0 for 10 from 3-point range.

"That's the way we can play," DeChellis said of the first-half run. "Then we get a little sloppy. We've got a lot of young kids. There's nobody out there to calm everybody down."

The victory kept Penn State from going 0 for 3 in the tournament. The Nittany Lions lost to UNC Wilmington in Thursday's opening round and lost to Tulane in Friday's second round.

"We didn't shoot the ball well here at all," DeChellis said. "We were very poor shooting, which really hurt us. Even though we shot the ball poorly, I thought we had a chance to win both of those games."

Penn State shot 39.6 percent from the field against the Wildcats, 30.9 percent from the field against Tulane and 32.3 percent from the field in the loss to UNCW.

Davidson lost to South Florida 65-58 in the opening round and to La Salle 84-70 on Friday.
