WA captures Class AAA title

Mike Caputo carried 25 times for 178 yards and scored four touchdowns to help West Allegheny defeat Hopewell, 36-28, and win its fifth WPIAL Class AAA title and first since 2001 Friday at Heinz Field.

The win overshadowed a great game by Rushel Shell, who ran 42 time for 274 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Caputo scored on runs of 12, five, 29 and 11 yards to give West Allegheny (11-2) a 29-14 lead at halftime. Jared Buck's one-yard run in the third quarter put WA up 36-21.

Shell scored from six, four and 68 yards to help Hopewell (12-1) rally. His last scored made it 36-28.

Hopewell drove to West Allegheny's four-yard line in the final minutes but a fourth-down pass by quarterback Matt Hundenski fell incomplete.

Greensburg CC 33, Aliquippa 7:

David Miller rushed 34 times for 203 yards and three touchdowns to power Greensburg Central Catholic to a 33-7 victory over Aliquippa to capture the Class AA title.

Miller scored on runs of 79, four and two yards for the Centurians, who had scoring drives of 48, 57 and 40 yards.

Mikal Hall's six-yard run gave Aliquippa a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. But it was all Greensburg Central Catholic (11-2) after that.

Aliquippa, which finished with an 11-2 record, had 153 total yards.

Trent Hurley scored on a two-yard run and Evan Marshall a 15-yard pass from Hurley to account for Greensburgh Central Catholic's other scores.

Clairton 14, Rochester 13:

Clairton stopped a two-point conversion try by Rochester's Trey Johnson to grab a spine-tingling 14-13 victory in the WPIAL Class A championship.

Rochester scored with 1:10 to play on a 22-yard pass to Jasson Adamson and head coach Gene Matsook went for the win.

It was the second consecutive WPIAL championship for the Bears (12-1). Rochester ended the season at 12-1.

Johnson scored on a two-yard run to give the Rams a 7-6 halftime lead. Deontae Howard had a 15-yard touchdown run for Clairton but the two-point conversion pass failed.

Desimon Green's 14-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter put the Bears up 14-7.
