“I was pretty excited about being able to be Gunzenhauser,” Standish said. “I like our course more than Grove City’s. Ours has more hills.”
Picking up speed: To meet his goal of qualifying for the PIAA Cross Country Championships, Standish wakes up before 6 a.m. on days without meets to run four to five miles. After meets, he runs anywhere from 40 minutes to one hour.
“He’s extremely dedicated,” Trinity boys cross country coach Donald Zimak said. “What feeds Mike’s desire is striving for perfection. He wants to be the best he can at everything he does.”
Upon graduation: With a 4.75 GPA, Standish ranks first in Trinity’s senior class. His favorite subjects are math and science and Standish plans on attending an Ivy League school.
“I’m pretty good at math and science but it hasn’t helped me on the course,” Standish said. “I guess it works in terms of fractions. I know when I’m half-way done.”
Did you know: Standish is a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and teaches Sunday School at Immaculate Conception in Washington.
