Five police departments in Washington County have received platinum awards from the American Automobile Association for their community highway safety programs.

The AAA awards were given to state police in Washington, and the Canonsburg and North Strabane, South Strabane and Peters Township departments.

To be eligible for the annual awards, a community must conduct traffic safety promotions and educate the public on safety topics.

“The purpose of the award program is to recognize these great efforts that have advanced the cause of traffic safety so they can be shared and emulated by others,” said J.J. Miller, a AAA safety worker.

If AAA gave awards based on the number of cars pulled over by police for supposed violations, Cecil Twp would have been on top.
