Historic Brownsville bridge will be restored

The state Department of Transportation will spend $1.2 million to preserve an historic bridge in Brownsville.

The money to work on the Brownsville Inter-county Bridge is being pulled from Pennsylvania’s share of funding in President Obama’s economic stimulus bill.

PennDOT was able to add the bridge project and others to the list of projects receiving the funding because bids for other work came in lower than expected, Gov. Ed Rendell announced today.

The Brownsville bridge was built in 1913 over the Monongahela River between Fayette and Washington counties and along an old section of U.S Route 40.

The 945-foot-long bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places because it was fastened together with pins in an engineering style invented by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Good for Brownsville : 11/23/2009
It is a good thing. Brownsville/West Brownsville is beautiful and the detour will be worth the outcome. This area deserves alot more stimulus money - there is rich history here that needs to be preserved. That bridge is only a small part of it.

West Brownsville-Brownsville Bridge : 1/1/2010
How good to know that this bridge is being preserved. I walked it and rode over it many, many times and thinking of it brings fond memories. I believe this bridge was shown in the movie "Deerhunter". Glad it's being cared for.
