A 53-year-old Smithfield man died from an accidental gunshot wound to the chest late Wednesday while he was apparently hunting along Rocky Ridge Road in Whiteley Township, Greene County.

Mark Gerard Petrun was pronounced dead by Greene County Deputy Coroner Mary Lewis shortly after 11 p.m.

State police said Petrun was discovered by family members on the family property after he failed to return home after dark.

Lewis said it appeared Petrun tripped or fell on wet leaves and the gun discharged. She said the rifle's safety was not engaged.
