Take a bite out of these sandwiches

This article has been read 686 times.

In an effort to bring you all things weird and wonderful, I share with you the Web site Insanewiches.com/.

Foodies with way too much time on their hands have created this off-the-wall site as a diversion for folks in need of a breather from the real world.

The premise is simple: Folks submit photos of their sandwich creations. The crazier, the better. Visitors vote for their favorites and, voila, a Web site is born!

On a recent escape (No, Boss, I wasn't surfing the 'Net on company time), I found some particularly creative concoctions, including the Double-Decker Dumbbell Sandwich, in the shape of, you guessed it, a 10-pound dumbbell. Then there's The Smaller-Than-Your-Thumbwich, which may very well be the world's smallest pastrami sandwich. I wonder if the creator used the world's smallest chef's knife to slice the bread?

A hands-down favorite among regular visitors has to be the Cordless Mousewich with USB Cheese Stick, receiving a 9.1 rating out of a possible 10. No doubt popular with the computer geeks.

No, this is not serious stuff. But, hey, we all can use a laugh now and then.

Summer is coming to an end, and that can mean only one thing: Oktoberfest.

No better way to celebrate than with a hand-crafted beer like Leinenkugel's Oktoberfest, available now through October.

Its traditional German Marzen-style flavor pairs nicely with, say, some sauerkraut and brats. In fact, try making the brats in the beer, using this recipe, courtesy of Leinenkugel.

Leinenkugel's Oktoberfest-Infused Brew Brats

n Ingredients

1 dozen brats

1 dozen brat buns

Leinenkugel's Oktoberfest, to cover

1 medium-large sweet onion, sliced

1 green pepper, sliced

1 yellow pepper, sliced

1 red pepper, sliced

2 ounces butter

Place brats in a Dutch oven with sliced onions, peppers and butter, and cover the brats with Leinenkugel's Oktoberfest. Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer until brats are cooked. Remove brats and set aside remaining beer mixture. Grill brats until golden brown and return to beer mixture until ready to serve. Serve brats on fresh brat buns with your favorite toppings (sauerkraut, onions, peppers, ketchup, mustard).

From the new product file: Nature Valley has introduced a new line of snacks, Granola Nut Clusters, featuring select roasted nuts, whole grain oats and honey. The lightly sweet, yet salty snack comes in four flavors and retails for $3.79.

In the frozen foods case, check out Birds Eye Foods' new Premium Frozen Seafood Meals. The line of six complete meals cook in a parchment paper steaming bag, which cooks seafood in its juices to seal in moisture and flavor. Shrimp, salmon or tilapia are combined with al dente pasta or a bed of rice alongside a medley of Birds Eye veggies. A single serving sells for $5.99; Seafood Meals for Two retial for $10.99.
