Varsity hockey

Matt Smith's shorthanded goal, his second goal of the game, proved to be the difference in Trinity's 3-2 victory over Keystone Oaks in the PIHL season opener for both teams.

Jonathan Lesko also scored for the Hillers and goalie Andrew Mack made 39 saves. Brandon Boggs, Austin Webber and Ryan Shore each had one assist.

WPIAL soccer

Charleroi was eliminated from the WPIAL Class A playoffs, 2-0 at the hands of Beaver County Christian. No further information was provided to the Observer-Reporter.

n Quaker Valley defeated South Fayette, 1-0, in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs. No further information was provided to the Observer-Reporter.

In the NHL

Mike Modano's third-period goal snapped a tie and lifted the slumping Dallas Stars to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers in the return to Madison Square Garden of noted pest Sean Avery.

n Francis Bouillon scored 10:53 into the third period in his season debut and the Montreal Canadiens extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over the Florida Panthers.

College golf

The Washington & Jefferson College women's golf team collected its third team title of the fall season after capturing the championship at the five-team Grove City College Fall Invitational at the Grove City Country Club.

The Presidents also won team titles at Saint Vincent and the Presidents' Athletic Conference fall tournaments.

Senior Alison Lazorchak claimed her second medalist award of the fall season after shooting 90.

Players honored

Waynesburg senior cross country runner Megan Grover ended her final regular season with the Yellow Jackets on one heck of a roll.

In her last four meets, Grover has two wins and two third-place finishes over that stretch.

n W&J defensive end Jacob Bloomhuff was named PAC Defensive Player of the Week. Bloomhuff had 21/2 sacks and six tackles in the Presidents' 72-20 victory over St. Vincent.
