‘Zoo’ a winner

I walk into the theater, sit down with my chocolate chip cookie dough bites and the screen before me lights up with the words “We Bought A Zoo.”

“We Bought A Zoo” is an interesting title, as I had no idea anyone could “buy a zoo.” Well folks, you can, and that’s exactly what Benjamin Mee did. The film is based upon a book of the same title which is based on a true story. The film revolves around the main character, Benjamin Mee, played by Matt Damon, who decides to buy a zoo after the death of his wife. It’s a chance for his family, made up of 12-year-old Dylan and 7-year-old Rosie, to start over. Once Mee purchases the zoo, he has to learn how to operate it and have the facility pass inspection in time for it to reopen. Mee uses money from a trust fund from his father to pay for the costs of opening the zoo.

This film makes my top 10 list of movies I’ve ever seen. I felt director Cameron Crowe did an excellent job bringing this picture to life from a script he co-wrote.

The film has a warm feeling when you watch it. I felt like I was part of the story when I was watching. Crowe gave depth to his telling of the story, and the cinematography was excellent.

I also give kudos to Crowe for choosing Damon to play the role of Benjamin Mee; he fit the role perfectly. According to an article on backstage.com, Crowe sought Damon out and traveled to the set of “True Grit” which was filming in Austin, Texas, to visit Damon and pitch the film to him. He could have chosen one of the actors the studio felt might fit the role better, but Crowe went with his gut feeling and I think his gut feeling was right. I also was impressed with the other talent in the film, some of the best in the business, including Scarlett Johansson and Elle Fanning, among others. The little girl who played Rosie, Maggie Elizabeth Jones, sold the show with her adorable giggles and smiles.

The original score, written by Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi Birgisson, was an added bonus. Sigur Ros is an Icelandic minimalist band. To be quite honest, I was a bit leery that Crowe had chosen an independent artist to score the film. However, my fears were put to rest when I heard the score; so much so, I made it a point to purchase one of the songs.

This film was excellent – well acted and well directed. It also would not surprise me if “We Bought a Zoo” took home an Oscar or two at this year’s 87th Annual Academy Awards.
