The remodeling being done at Chartiers-Houston Jr./Sr. High School is leaving people with mixed feelings, but one thing is for certain – the change is very big for everybody.
“It was intrusive at first, but now it’s really nice compared to what we had”, said Taylor Buchta, 15, a junior at Chartiers-Houston High School.
Chartiers-Houston has been under construction for about one year. Renovations have included work to the junior high wing and much of the schools facilities, including the cafeteria, library, band and art rooms, a baseball diamond at Allison Park Elementary School, as well as the tech and computer labs. Also, a brand new sports complex is being installed as an addition to the existing high school.

During the 2010-11 school year, construction was in full swing. The school literally was being torn apart and parts of the school were closed off and others moved; the chaos was unsettling to some students.
“The sports complex is a little ridiculous; I hate the new (paint) colors. Not having proper ceilings and especially not having clocks in half the school,” were issues as stated by C-H junior Jacob Restaino, 16.
Some may ask, “Why renovate?”
The junior high wing was built in 1948, and the senior high was built in 1959; renovations that occurred in 1987 had fallen into disrepair. Even the senior high gymnasium still had its original performance stage from its days as an auditorium in the 1960s and ’70s.
On October 4, 2010, phase one of the four phase project to renovate began. It continued throughout the summer and now, into the school year.
As construction began at the high school, work also started at the baseball diamond that resided where the sports complex is now located. A new field, concession stands, dugouts and spectator bleachers for home and away visitors were constructed near Allison Park Elementary. The new sports and fitness complex will be open to students as well as the public, so for no cost, anybody can use the facilities provided by Chartiers-Houston.
With the new facilities nearly complete, students have been embracing the changes at C-H, including the complete cafeteria, band and art rooms, main offices and junior high wing.
All in all, for everybody in the school district, the new additions will prove useful for years to come.
