Washington County Police Beat 11/24/2009

CANONSBURG

Man faces charges: Jerry Hickman, 23, of 224 S. Jefferson Ave., Canonsburg, faces charges of terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness stemming from an incident Saturday night.

Police found him bleeding from a laceration on his wrist after apparently falling from a porch roof at 112 S. Jefferson. Police said he was trying to talk with an 18-year-old woman inside the home.

Hickman got up and ran to his home. Police said he went out onto his porch roof, threw shingles at the officers and refused to come down. A friend was able to talk him down. He reportedly threatened ambulance personnel who arrived to take him to Canonsburg General Hospital. He was later transferred to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. Hickman was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon.

Theft from vehicle: Louis Hayman of 215 E. College St., Canonsburg, told Canonsburg police Friday that a bag containing a bottle of 90 Vicodin tablets was stolen from the seat of his unlocked car while it was parked at Shop 'n Save, Pike Street, on Wednesday.

Driver injured: Donald W. Packey, 47, of 46 Anchor Drive, Washington, was injured Sunday morning when his vehicle was hit from behind by a vehicle driven by Robert Mastic, 41, of 101 Bow St., Canonsburg, on West Pike Street near the Veterans of Foreign Wars post, Canonsburg police said.

CANTON TOWNSHIP

Jailed in burglary: Rickey Edwin Wright, 51, of 746 Ewing St., and Clifford Allan Blakeslee, 52, of 7 Christy Lane, both of Washington, were arrested Thursday night by state police after allegedly entering an abandoned home at 460 Baird Ave., Canton, and stealing a 25-inch television.

A boy reportedly told adults about the theft after seeing the men with the television. After they were confronted, Wright and Blakeslee ran. Blakeslee threw an extension cord at the boy before running.

Both men were arraigned before District Judge Valarie Costanzo and placed in Washington County Jail on $10,000 bond. Wright is charged with burglary and theft. Blakeslee is charged with burglary, theft and harassment.

Harassment charges: Nina M. Carpenter, 46, and Michelle Ann Powell, 36, both of Washington, will be charged with harassment by state police after they allegedly hit and shoved each other Sunday during a confrontation at Carpenter's home at 550 Linnwood Ave., Canton.

Charged with harassment: Tracy Garrett, 36, of Washington, will be charged with harassment by state police after allegedly trying to fight with Jessica Spangler, 25, of Washington, at 629 Buena Vista St., Canton, early Sunday. Police said the two had a fight earlier at a local bar.

DONORA

Jailed in assault: Brandon William Lennex, 19, of 920 McKean Ave., Donora, was arrested early Sunday by Donora police, accused of assaulting Leah Jarvis at his home. Witnesses told police they saw him choking her. He yelled at them to go away.

Inside the home, police said, the living room was in disarray. He struggled with officers trying to take him into custody.

Lennex was arraigned before District Judge Valarie Costanzo on charges of simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He was placed in Washington County Jail on $10,000 bond.

EAST WASHINGTON

Jailed in assault: Brian Henry Lloyd, 42, of Apt. 2, 31 North Ave., East Washington, was charged by borough police with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct for striking a woman Saturday morning.

Police said Lloyd had placed his hands around the neck of Jennifer Lynn Demarco, of the same address, with intent to choke her. After police arrived he left to go to his mother's house.

Police said Lloyd later returned to the apartment and struck Demarco in the left eye, arm and about her torso in front of two children, ages 3 and 8.

Lloyd was arraigned before District Judge Robert Redlinger and jailed on $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing was set for Dec. 3.

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP

Windows damaged: Antonio Manion of 91 Highland Ave., Independence, told state police Saturday that vandals threw rocks at his home, damaging two windows.

MARIANNA

Store burgled: Linda Piatt of 1750 Main St., Marianna, told state police that her convenience store was burglarized late Thursday or early Friday. Stolen from the store were lottery tickets and cigarettes valued at $500.

NORTH FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP

Driver injured: Melvin Carl, 77, of 2050 Park Ave., Washington, was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash about 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Park Avenue and Franklin Farms Road.

North Franklin police said Carl was traveling south on Park when a northbound vehicle driven by Johnathan Laschinsky, 16, of 887 Melvin Ave., Washington, made a left turn into Carl's path. Laschinsky, who was accompanied by his father, had a learner's permit.

Carl was flown by helicopter to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, where he was in good condition Monday afternoon.

Two face charges: Robert A. Schafer, 20, and Joseph I. Avelar, 20, both of 4428 Route 40, Claysville, face charges after they were caught Monday reportedly trying to break into arcade machines at the Game Room, Washington Crown Center.

North Franklin police said Avelar was standing at the entrance to the arcade when he saw mall security approach. He yelled for Schafer to stop. Security saw Schafer using bolt cutters and a screwdriver trying to break into a machine. He also had a folding knife.

Schafer was charged with criminal conspiracy, attempted theft and possessing instruments of a crime. Avelar was charged with attempted theft and criminal conspiracy. Charges will be sent by summons from the office of District Judge Robert Redlinger.

NORTH STRABANE TOWNSHIP

Rowboat stolen: Betty Reeder of 279 Green Valley Road told North Strabane police Saturday that a rowboat with orange stripes on the bottom was stolen from near a pond on her property.

Charged in crash: James R. Moran, 28, of 38 Sycamore St., Muse, will be charged with driving under suspension following a one-vehicle crash early Sunday in the 500 block of West McMurray Road.

North Strabane police said Moran was driving west in the 500 block of West McMurray when he swerved to avoid a deer. His vehicle went off the road to the right, hitting stone pillars at 522 W. McMurray. The vehicle went around a mailbox and hit another pillar before going another 200 feet and coming to a stop in a driveway.

Driver injured: Susan A. Cheramie, 44, of 319 Pike Run Drive, Daisytown, was injured Thursday in a head-on crash on Route 519 near Linnwood Road. North Strabane police said she was driving south when her vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, hitting a vehicle driven by Brian Coyne, 50, of Pittsburgh, before striking an embankment.

Vehicle hits tree: Nicholas Hilderbrand, 17, of 81 Lindley Road, North Strabane, escaped injury Thursday night when his vehicle went off Lindley Road, hit a tree and rolled over, North Strabane police said. He will be cited for going too fast for conditions.

Phony bill passed: A counterfeit 10-dollar bill was passed Saturday morning at The Meadows Casino & Racetrack, Racetrack Road, North Strabane, state police said.

SMITH TOWNSHIP

Man jailed: James Armstrong of 723 Wildwood Drive, McDonald, was arrested Friday by Smith police for allegedly sending text messages to a township girl and sending her an explicit photo this month.

In October, he allegedly posted an advertisement on Craigslist.com, which included a sexually explicit message about the girl and listed her name and telephone number.

Armstrong was arraigned before District Judge Gary Havelka on charges of displaying sexually explicit material to a minor, corruption of minors, indecent exposure, open lewdness, harassment and disorderly conduct. He was placed in Washington County Jail on $5,000 bond.

SOMERSET TOWNSHIP

Vehicles collide: Nakia Kelley, 34, of Scenery Hill, was slightly injured Wednesday morning when her vehicle and a vehicle driven by Richard Cooke, 52, of Cokeburg, collided at Route 917 near Pigeon Creek Road, state police said.

Cooke was cited with a stop sign violation.

SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP

Criminal mischief: A man who police believe was intoxicated was staying at the Knight's Inn early Sunday and was cited for criminal mischief after he broke a window, police said.

Patrick Neill, 44, of Sunny Acres, Chavin, La., could not locate his room and was wearing only his underwear when he knocked on doors at 3:30 a.m., police said. He damaged a window valued at $175, police said.

Harassment citation: Shawn P. Pfahler, 23, of the 6000 block of Clubhouse Road, Nevillewood, was cited for harassment following a disturbance at the Wheel Park, Washington Pike, Bridgeville, police said.

Pfahler was fighting and was asked to leave the bar at 12:45 a.m., police said.

SOUTH STRABANE TOWNSHIP

Vandalism reported: Vandals painted graffiti on the wall of the northwest side of a building at Tanger Outlets, Tanger Boulevard, Friday, South Strabane police said.

WASHINGTON

Jailed for threats: James Troy Hickman, 47, of Apt. 1, 15 N. Main St., Washington, was charged with four counts of making terroristic threats, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct following an incident at Shop 'n Save, 125 E. Beau St., Friday.

Police said Hickman had been removed from the store earlier in the day and told not to return.

About 3 p.m. he entered the store and threatened to kill manager Janet Briancesco and split open employee Michael McKay's head with a club he had in his pocket.

When police arrived Hickman threatened to kill Lt. Roy Loeffert and Patrolman Matt Karlowsky. Police said he also yelled obscenities inside and outside the store.

Hickman was arraigned before District Judge Robert Redlinger and jailed on $10,000 straight bond. A hearing has been set for Dec. 10.
