Beer sales at grocery to begin next week
Giant Eagle spokesman Dick Roberts said Thursday that the local store had planned to begin beer sales today but had some last-minute adjustments to work out with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
"They're hoping it will be Tuesday," Roberts said. He said the store, which earlier received a license from the PLCB, will offer beer for sale in the South Strabane Township store's cafe area. Roberts said customers can purchase up to two beers for consumption in the cafe with the purchase of a meal.
Those who want to take beer with them can purchase up to two six-packs. The store will offer about 200 different brands of premium, microbrew and imported beer.

"Customers won't be able to purchase beer at the store's regular checkout lines," he said.
The O'Hara Township-based supermarket chain started selling beer at its new Market District store in Robinson Township on Nov. 5, making it the first in the area to sell beer. Roberts said the chain has sold beer in its Ohio stores for some time.
But it soon could be offering the beverage at more of its stores in the Keystone State.
On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved liquor licenses to permit six more Giant Eagle stores to sell beer in Homestead, Monroeville, Pine Township, West Mifflin and West View, as well as a store in Erie.
