Some veterans face a more personal battle on the homefront after they are discharged from military service.

Retired Marine Cpl. Christopher Morris likened coming home to being dropped in a war zone. He said veterans have limited resources, little knowledge of what to expect and one goal – survival.

The Observer-Reporter will discuss the plight facing veterans upon coming home in a series of occasional stories that will focus on a variety of topics, including post-traumatic stress disorder, challenges of receiving adequate medical care and benefits, homelessness and a high rate of suicide.

The series will run in the newspaper's print and digital editions throughout 2015, with special online features, including additional data, videos and podcasts.
