Saved in a photo

The second-floor living room in an apartment dating to 1883 in  a building later used Vaughn Chevrolet at 101-109 E. Main St., Monongahela, Pa. The structure in one of America's National Register of Historic Districts was demolished about a decade ago.

A fire 1950s style



A crowd shot of a fire in the mid-1950s in Monongahela, Pa., about the same time the streetcar line was discontinued through the downtown. This fire took place in the 200 block of West Main Street in the general vicinity of a set of explosions that sparked a blaze that destroyed two buildings across the street in September 2009. They mined the Ella


Charlie Gillingham, top right, was the blacksmith at Ella Mine in Sunnyside, Pa., about 1900 when this group photo was snapped. Frank Hepner, seated fourth from right, was the only other man identified in the photograph that was rescued from the trash when the Monongahela Daily-Herald newspaper closed in 1986.
