Washington eyes tax increase for first time in 5 years

City of Washington residents could be facing their first tax increase since 2019. CIty Council unanimously approved a $16,285,581 spending plan that sets millage for land at 40.21, a 1.5-mill increase. The rate for buildings remains at 4.03 mills in the preliminary budget. Councilman Ken Westcott, who chairs the finance department, said the average homeowner will pay an additional $220 in taxes if the current budget is adopted in December. “We’re going to pare that down best we can before a final reading,” Westcott said. “Hopefully, some revenues come in that we didn’t anticipate.
