Consol Energy reports first-quarter loss
CANONSBURG – Consol Energy Inc. Thursday reported a net loss of $2 million, or 1 cent per share for its first quarter, ended March 31.
The loss for the first three months of the year by the Southpointe-based producer of coal and natural gas was marked by a mine fire.
The first-quarter results were down from net income of $97 million, or 42 cents a share, the company reported in the comparable quarter in 2012.
First-quarter revenue was $1.29 billion, down from 2012’s $1.43 billion.
In providing an operations update for its first quarter earlier this month, Consol noted a March 12 underground fire at its Blacksville No. 2 Mine in Greene County was responsible for a pre-tax expense impact of $15.2 million. The fire was extinguished and no one was injured, but it is unknown when mine operations will resume.
