Donora to host sessions on Pitt initiative for businesses
The University of Pittsburgh is launching an initiative intended to increase entrepreneurial activity in the Mon Valley.
Pitt faculty members and staffers are behind “Advancing Entrepreneurship in the Mon Valley Region.” They will consult with residents who want to start or expand businesses.
It is a $600,000 project funded by $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration and a matching amount from the university.
“The mission of this initiative is to create a pathway for potential small business owners in the Mon Valley to open and develop profitable enterprises within their communities and link those enterprises to public and private partnerships throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania,” Sabina Deitrick, the initiative’s principal investigator, said in a statement. Deitrick also is the director of Pitt’s Urban and Regional Analysis Program, part of the University Center for Social and Urban Research.
Pitt will provide community workshops in the Mon Valley, at sites in Donora, Munhall and McKeesport. The Donora series will be at Career Link, 570 Galiffa Drive. The initial session will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 10, followed by “The First Step: Mechanics of Starting a Small Business” from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct.8 and “The Second Step: Creating a Business Plan” from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 22.
