US Steel to lay off 165 at western Pennsylvania plant
WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (AP) — U.S. Steel Corp. has announced plans to temporarily lay off 165 workers at a western Pennsylvania plant.
The company said the layoffs will begin Sunday at the Irvin plant in West Mifflin, which makes steel sheet for the appliance, automotive and container industries.
U.S. Steel says high levels of imports, falling steel prices and fluctuating oil prices contributed to the decision.
The plant is one of four facilities that make up the company’s Mon Valley Works, which employs 3,000 people.
West Mifflin Mayor Chris Kelly says he hopes the layoffs will be brief and “those affected will be punching the time clock relatively soon.”
