W&J Energy Lecture Series set for new season
Washington & Jefferson College’s Energy Lecture Series is ready to power up.
The fourth annual program will begin Sept. 10 with a session titled “Today’s Grid: A System Under Pressure.” It will feature two speakers: Gregory Reed, director of the Center for Energy, director of the Electric Power Initiative and a professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering; and John A. Swanson, founder and retired chief technologist at Ansys Inc.
Modernization of the energy grid will be the theme of the series, which was organized by W&J’s Center for Energy Policy and Management, directed by Diana Stares.
This year’s program, in fact, will be called the Grid Academy, and will focus on risks, challenges and opportunities related to the electric power sector. W&J is partnering with the National Academy of Sciences’ and National Academy of Engineering’s Science & Engineering Ambassadors Program on the initiative.
Three other sessions are planned for the school year: “The Smart Grid: Innovating for Efficiency and Reliability,” in October; “Managing Uncertainty: The New Economics of the Power Industry” (February) and “Threats: Protecting the Grid” (March).
All sessions will begin at 7 p.m. in Yost Auditorium in the Burnett Center on W&J’s campus. All are free and open to the public, and although registration is not required, it is recommended.
