Meadows Casino reports ’14 economic impact on area
Once again, The Meadows Casino proved to be a good bet for local and statewide economies.
Figures released Thursday show the casino disbursed more than $227 million throughout Pennsylvania in 2014. That included $135 million-plus in gaming taxes to the state Department of Revenue.
Sean Sullivan, vice president and general manager of the gaming and entertainment complex, said in a news release, “The Meadows remains as a major economic generator for Southwestern Pennsylvania.”
The North Strabane Township facility spent about $42 million-plus on local taxes, vendors, supplies and charitable donations, and another $50.2 million in payroll and other costs for about 1,300 employees
Disbursements to Washington and Allegheny counties in 2014 totaled more than $36 million. That figure doesn’t include $14.3 million (for calendar year 2014) that went to Washington’s Local Share Account, which helps fuel economic development and community improvement projects. More than $65 million went to the LSA fund since the program began in 2008.
Beyond The Meadows’ contributions to the local economy through its gaming revenue, the complex is also generating other economic development activity by its presence along Racetrack Road.
Outside entities likewise are investing in projects near the casino and horse track. Meadows Hotel Associates LLC, which isn’t affiliated with The Meadows, is building a 155-room Hyatt Place hotel on 4 acres in front of the complex, which is targeted to open this spring. And Horizon Properties is developing “Street at The Meadows,” a 22-acre retail and apartment development along Racetrack Road.
