It’s full speed ahead for Penn Station East Coast Subs.

Construction is proceeding on the sub restaurant in the Old Mill project, near Buffalo Wild Wings and Field & Stream. Managing owner John-David Wright forecasts a mid-March opening.

Penn Station is a Cincinnati-based chain with locations mainly in the Midwest and South. Its signature items include Philadelphia cheese steaks, freshly cut fries and freshly squeezed lemonade. Wright said there are 14 sub varieties in four sizes – 4, 6, 10 and 12 inches.

Wright is one of four partners in West Virginia-based Best Subs Too LLC, the company that owns this Penn Station location. He, Ryan Blake and spouses Roger and Marilyn Kirkland have seven of the chain’s restaurants in the Mountaineer state.

The South Strabane Township site will be their first in Pennsylvania – with probably more to follow. Wright anticipates launching other Penn Station sites “in the Washington County area.”

There are three Penn Station shops in the Pittsburgh area under different ownership: the downtown and Shadyside sections of Pittsburgh and Monroeville.

Wright said his ownership group is planning to hire 25 for Old Mill, and that applicants for shift manager and crew should call 304-941-7366.

Restaurant hours, he said, have not been formally established, but likely will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Speedway, appropriately on a hill overlooking Racetrack Road, is bearing down on the checkered flag. The convenience store complex is targeted to open in Meadows Landing late this week, said Stefanie Griffith, communications manager for Marathon Petroleum Corp., Speedway’s parent.

The convenience store giant is putting the final touches on a 3,900-square-foot location with 16 fueling lanes and store featuring a walk-in area with cold packaged soft drinks and a Speedy Café.

Griffith described the café as a “fast casual restaurant where customers place their orders on a self-serve ordering kiosk. The food is freshly prepared and will feature paninis, subs, specialty dogs, [customized] pizzas” and other items.

This will be the third tenant to wheel into the South Strabane Township project off Route 19. Washington Health System’s outpatient center and Washington Area Teachers Federal Credit Union opened in the fall.

Speedway LLC, based in Enon, Ohio, has a presence in Western Pennsylvania, but this is its first foray into Washington or Greene counties. The company has more than 2,700 stores in 22 states, including West Virginia and Ohio.
