Lights out for Weather Channel for Verizon FiOS customers

1 min read

NEW YORK (AP) – Verizon is dropping The Weather Channel from its FiOS TV service, saying more and more customers are getting their weather information on phone apps and online.

Verizon said the channel’s contract ran out and was not renewed for its 5.6 million customers.

But it’s still offering weather channels on TV. On Tuesday it launched the new AccuWeather Network on one channel and its mobile app and has a WeatherBug “widget” on another channel.

The Weather Channel said it’s disappointed it was pulled while negotiating a contract renewal. It said Verizon doesn’t want to negotiate further.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean the end for the channel. It said it has recently renewed agreements with Cox and Time Warner Cable, two of the country’s biggest cable providers.
