Meadows Casino to host $5 million golf event for tourism

3 min read

The Meadows Casino said Tuesday it will host The Meadows $5 Million Challenge on July 20 at Southpointe Golf Club.

The Meadows said in a news release the three-day golf and entertainment event, presented by Visit Washington County PA, will attract golfers and attendees from around the country, provide an economic infusion for Washington County businesses and tourism and assist in supporting Achieva and its early intervention services to families in Washington County.

The challenge will be open to a total of 30 foursomes, with each team being paired with a Club PGA professional. Professionals will compete for a $40,000 purse – the second largest in Pennsylvania.

“The Meadows Casino is our largest tourism attraction in terms of both visitors and economic impact, drawing millions to our county each year,” said Jeff Kotula, president of Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency.

“Our focus for this event is to further market our golf courses, sports and recreational attractions, shopping amenities and historical sites, all while generating revenue for our local businesses.”

The organizers said excitement for the golf event will build as amateurs are entered in the $5 Million Challenge. Officials will choose eight participants by taking the two closest to the pin winners from each of the four par 3 holes. After the round, the group of eight will have a shot on the 18th hole to win $5 Million with a hole-in-one (165 yards for men and 150 yards for women).

If the amateur makes a hole-in-one, the $5 million will be split with each team member receiving $1 million.

“The Meadows Casino has evolved into an entertainment destination, particularly as amenities continue to be added to the Racetrack Road corridor,” said Bill Paulos, president and co-founder of The Meadows’ parent company Cannery Casino Resorts.

“We anticipate this three-day event will go a long way in showcasing Washington County and its robust tourist attractions.”

Beyond golf, participants of the challenge will be treated to an entire weekend of entertainment, including hotel accommodations and complimentary meals.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be given to Achieva. The nonprofit organization is the only agency of its type in Southwestern Pennsylvania that provides lifelong supports. From early intervention therapies, in-home support, to older adult protective services for medically fragile senior citizens, Achieva provides services through the entire life-span. The organization provides comprehensive services and supports and serves more than 14,500 people with disabilities and their families.

The $5 Million Challenge begins July 18 with a welcome reception and the Natalie Cole concert at The Meadows. On Sunday, July 19, a morning brunch will be followed by a $20,000 blackjack tournament and an evening VIP event.

On July 20, golf registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the tournament at 9 a.m., with dinner and prizes at the casino afterward.

“The Washington County area is energized with new growth and new opportunities,” said Donald Hammel, principal of Creative Visions, the event organizer. “I felt the time was right to create a first-class event filled with an amazing weekend of activities. We look forward to The Meadows $5 Million Challenge and expect it to become an annual event.”
