Report: Bass Pro may make bid for Cabela’s
Reuters news agency has reported that a large outdoors retailer may be in the hunt for a well-recognized competitor.
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” Reuters reported Nov. 5 that privately held Bass Pro Shops is looking into making a bid for Cabela’s Inc., and that publicly held Cabela’s has started to explore sales options by approaching private equity firms.
Reuters, an international service, said the sources requested anonymity because “deliberations are confidential.”
Cabela’s has more than 50 stores in the U.S. and Canada, including one slightly east of Triadelphia, W.Va. – less than a half-hour drive from Washington. The Sidney, Neb.-based firm has one store in Pennsylvania, in Hamburg, Berks County.
Springfield, Mo.-based Bass Pro Shops has about 70 stores in the U.S. and Canada. Neither company responded to phone calls seeking comment.
Speaking of outdoors stores … Field & Stream announced this week the launching of its first eCommerce website – FieldandStreamShop.com – where outdoors aficionados can access and purchase equipment, apparel and accessories.
Field & Stream, owned by Dick’s Sporting Goods, has 19 locations in six states, including the Old Mill complex off Route 19 in South Strabane Township.
