Jobless rate up in Washington, dips in Greene

Employment had its ups and downs locally in July. with Washington County experiencing a 0.3 percent increase in its unemployment rate from the previous month and Greene’s dipping by 0.1 percent.

Washington’s figure was 5.5 percent and Greene’s 5.7, according to seasonally adjusted statistics released Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

Washington County’s figure has risen six of the past seven months Greene’s rate has fallen three of the past four months since hitting 6.0 percent in March.

Both rates are exceed the U.S. (5.3) and Pennsylvania (5.4) rates for July.

Washington is one of seven counties in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a 5.2 percent July rate, the same as June. The MSA also includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette and Westmoreland counties.
