Contura Energy Inc., a leading U.S. coal supplier, has updated its 2018 production outlook for Cumberland Mine, its longwall operation near Waynesburg.

The Bristol, Tenn.-based company said “unforeseen geologic conditions” in recent weeks “have occurred due to reduced coal seam thickness and localized soft clay influences within the coal seam.” This, the firm said, has resulted in decreased production and processing.

Cumberland Mine was shut down for several days in mid-June “to more effectively manage raw stockpile levels.” Production has resumed, but Contura expects tonnage levels to be reduced for several weeks.

Contura projects its total Northern Appalachia shipments for 2018 will be about 1 million tons below the previously announced guidance of 7.1 million to 7.5 million tons.
