Beat reporters at newspapers today, especially those at smaller-circulation dailies, are responsible for a wide spectrum of coverage. So it is with my beat — business — at the Observer-Reporter, a seven-days-a-week publication in Washington, Pa.
I cover everything from local supermarkets to health care to the oil and gas industry, and that is reflected in my six-story entry. This package features articles on a successful family grocery; a nationally renowned safecracker; a hospital system stoking competition by crossing into Pennsylvania; and two industries that are prevalent in the region, but struggling: farming and natural gas development.
