Goodwill renames regional campus in honor of late president
A longtime North Franklin Township resident who established a career – and a reputation – in the nonprofit sector was honored recently.
The Goodwill Industries of Southwestern Pennsylvania building in Pittsburgh has been dedicated and renamed the Michael J. Smith Campus in honor of the agency’s late president and CEO. The dedication took place on July 16.
Smith worked for the district Goodwill for 33 years. He served as the organization’s controller from 1989 to 2002, when he assumed the dual roles of president and CEO. He won numerous awards during that time.
Smith and his wife, Beth, shared their North Franklin home for 42 years. He led the regional Goodwill for 20 years before retiring in October 2022. Smith died three days after Christmas in 2023.
“We moved here for Mike to take a job as controller at Lang’s Fashions,” Beth said, referring to one of several Washington County retail stores for which he worked. “He served on the boards of Easter Seals, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and T.E.C., which probably all helped lead him to a career with nonprofits.”

Christopher Musuneggi, the group’s president, said in a statement: “We are pleased to open the new offices. It is the next step in our evolution as a premier financial planning firm.
