Philanthropy matters: WCCF Gives demonstrates local generosity, local impact
For local nonprofits, September brings more than the start of fall. It brings Washington Community Foundation’s WCCF Gives, a powerful day of generosity that fuels their missions all year long.
Over the past 12 years, WCCF Gives has awarded nearly $14 million to Washington County charities, supporting programs and resources that directly benefit the community. In addition to the vital support raised from donors, $100,000 in prizes will be awarded thanks to our generous sponsors: Chapman Corp., Washington Financial Charitable Foundation, Alex E. Paris Contracting, South Hills Toyota, GBU Life, the Observer-Reporter, and Coen Markets.
The Heritage Public Library is one of 152 organizations preparing for this year’s event. Director Nikki Sarchet said the impact has been easy to see.
“WCCF Gives has been vital in helping us grow and serve our community. The generous support has launched meaningful programs, expanded amenities, and brought people together through learning and connection.”
Contributions begin arriving in the summer through mailed checks and culminate on Sept. 18, when donors can give online at www.wccfgives.org from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Families, friends, and coworkers often make a point of giving together, knowing their collective generosity strengthens the place they call home.
On the final day of giving, the excitement builds as the online leaderboard updates in real time. Supporters can watch as contributions rise and know that their gifts are part of something bigger happening across the county.
For many nonprofits, that support can mean the difference between holding steady and expanding their reach. Nathan Heintz, Associate of Development and Technology at Vision Services of Washington-Greene, said the day provides both awareness and essential resources.
“WCCF Gives provides our organization with the ability to receive support from our community to allow us to continue our mission in aiding those with low vision in our community. It creates the opportunity for others to know what Vision Services of Washington-Greene provides for the visually impaired and the importance of preventive blindness.”
Larger organizations feel the impact as well. At Pennsylvania Elks Major Projects, Grant and Marketing Manager Stacy Hirst noted that donors have helped expand services for individuals with developmental disabilities. In 2024, the group supported 142 Washington County residents through 475 home visits.
“For years, WCCF Gives has been an invaluable partner in helping us achieve our mission,” Hirst said. “The generosity of WCCF Gives donors directly impacts the lives of Washington County residents and their families, enabling us to provide important services that enhance their health, independence, and overall well-being.”
For those who have not yet joined this community tradition, there is still time. Checks made payable to WCCF may be mailed to the foundation through Sept. 18, or gifts can be made online during the 12-hour giving window. Each contribution, no matter the size, helps sustain programs that enrich and strengthen life in Washington County.
