First impressions make a difference

I hope Canonsburg residents have had the opportunity to look around their personal environments and do some serious cleanup to their yards, porches and surrounding areas. This is very important, as the outside appearance of our properties is the first thing people see when they drive though our town. I must tell you that well-maintained properties sell very fast in our town. If we want to continue to have people move into Canonsburg, we have to show them how nice an area it is. If you haven’t had time to address outdoor appearance issues over the summer, there are still a few months left to get it done. Please make an effort to make our town the best it can be.

Our kids are going back to school, so obey our crossing guards, speed limits and signs to ensure everyone’s safety. Please be our extra set of eyes.

Keeping safety in mind is one of my most important issues. Watch over our neighborhoods. Over the last eight years, I have asked that everyone get involved with this program. Some major incidents have been resolved thanks to participation from residents. With your help and our police department, code enforcement officer and fire inspector, we can make our community safer and better.

I would like to thank our police department, EMS and fire department for the fine job they do every day to keep our town safe. They are second to none. No matter the call, they take pride in making sure everything is checked out. Thanks to these men and women for a job well done!

Another matter of concern in our community, as well as in all communities across the United States, is the drug epidemic. As I am writing this column, we had two deaths in our town due to heroin overdoses. We are doing our best through the help of our police department, the DEA, Washington Drug and Alcohol Commission and the District Attorney’s Drug Task Force to clean-up the drug issues in our town – but clean-up sometimes can only happen if residents report any suspicious activities. All calls are held in strict confidence.

Life is so precious, and it is very upsetting to me that these kinds of tragedies are occurring in our tight-knit community and all across America. Please take a personal stand against drug abuse and get involved so that we can help save a life.

As always, my open-door policy is in effect. If you have any concerns, ideas, or just want to talk in general, please come to the Mayor’s Office and let me hear from you. It is the people who get involved in their community that really make a difference. I look forward to seeing all of you at the upcoming Oktoberfest and throughout the community in the upcoming weeks.
