The basketball court is finally finished. Basketball, deck hockey and pickle ball groups have already commented favorably on the new court surface. Please be courteous when using the court with regard to music, noise and loud screaming, as voices and sound carry up into the residential neighborhood. Due to the fact that the courts are in the hollow of the park bowl, even when people are not being exceptionally loud, it can still be bothersome to residents. We are researching various sound barrier media and want to make sure that the court works out for everyone in the area. Video surveillance of the new area up to and including the softball fields is being finalized at this time.

Camp Splash

Camp Splash, a 7-week day camp at Canonsburg Town Park, is under way. Camp Splash provides children with activities that promote physical activity and friendship. It features three hours of swimming each day, weather permitting. Camp Splash has one counselor for every eight children. A hot lunch and snacks are provided every day. Camp Splash continues through Aug. 4.

Town Park Pool

Recently completed pool projects include rehabbing the bathhouse with all new LED lighting throughout as well as new skid proof, commercial grade flooring and, soon, roof repair. The center room (which used to be the entrance back in the day) will now be available to host small indoor parties should the weather become inclement.

Daily admission remains at $6; however, passes have been increased. Prices have not been raised in many years, and while this is a small increase, please know that we are always concerned about keeping this facility affordable to families and residents. The borough website is up and running, so check out park events online. You can also check us out on Facebook under Canonsburg Borough for the link to purchase passes. You can also purchase them directly at the pool front desk. We will again be offering swim lessons shortly after July 4.

Concerts in the Park

New this year, in addition to the Second Sunday concerts on the main stage and poolside bands on Wednesday evenings, will be new local solo or duo acts under the colonnades on Sunday afternoons. Many new start-up acts need some exposure and this will be a great time slot. Parents, grandparents and visitors will have a great chance to see Canonsburg’s newest talent for the first time.

Here’s the schedule:

Second Sunday Series, band shell, 6:30 p.m.

July 9 – Street Level

Aug. 13 – Elmoz Fire

Sept. 10 – Washington Jazz Orchestra

Wednesday Pool Series, 6:30 p.m.

July 5 – DJ Ray

July 12 – Tom Terling & Jo Lo

July 19 – DJ Dale Allen

July 26 – Shannon and the Merger

Pathways through the Park

Canonsburg Town Park is in desperate need of infrastructure / facility improvements. Some of the main projects that have become a priority are the pathways throughout the park. They all need pulled up and replaced, and this is quite an expensive and time-consuming undertaking. Several pavilions need to be rebuilt, rehabbed and walkways and bridges all are in need of some TLC. We are trying to revitalize all of our water fountains and playgrounds throughout the park. Our volunteer board is applying for local casino grants, and we need your help. Please tell the local officials about this park and how important it is to the community. With limited resources, and a diminishing tax base, this is our only option.

Dining Around the Pool

Dining Around the Pool will be held Sept. 9. Texas Roadhouse has once again graciously agreed to provide us with a fabulous prime rib dinner. Entertainment, appetizers and dessert will be included along with a fabulous Chinese auction. To volunteer or donate to this community event, please contact me at startare1@verizon.net. This event will be cut off at 200 people due to space constraints. Corporate sponsorship benefits are quite generous for this event with the advertising posted throughout the entire summer.

Here are the details:

Dining Around the Pool

Sept. 9

Party at 5 p.m.; dinner at 6 p.m.

$50 per person; $90 per couple

Tickets or more information: 724-746-7333

Park board seeking grant

Canonsburg Borough and its park board will be seeking a grant from the local share casino funds in 2018. The effort will begin this summer with an initial grant application, preparing estimates and prioritizing projects. Matching funds will be requested from non-profit groups, Canonsburg Borough and private donations. The park (located at VFW 191 drive) is a local economic asset and receives visitors from all surrounding municipalities and townships. This historic park is managed with a limited budget and needs the support from an industry that utilizes its facilities.

Bench project delayed

Our park bench project is delayed until the end of the summer season. These benches will be placed throughout the park to enhance the area as most of the existing benches are in need of replacement. We would also like to add more benches throughout the park, so if you have a loved one you would like to remember, a company you would like to sponsor one or a reunion commemorative, please contact us.
