Town Park Talk

Adam Manion has been hired as the new director at Town Park Pool. For the last 11 years, he has been a seventh grade social studies teacher at Canonsburg Middle School.
Manion has also been the Canonsburg Middle School Student Council sponsor for the last 10 years. He and his team have put together an amazing student government program, and the seventh and eighth graders actively participate in numerous fundraising/charitable efforts.
Manion believes being the Town Park Pool Director is another opportunity to interact with the Canon-Mac community. Manion, who grew up and still lives in Bethel Park, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and masters in education from Duquesne University.
New concession vendor
Rusty Gold will be the new concession vendor at the pool. We look forward to having an outside restaurant/business owner provide affordable menu items this year. Rusty Gold is very active in the community and has always been extremely supportive of the park.
Town Park Pool opened Memorial Day weekend for its 83rd season. Long awaited plans for repairs to the pool house roof and structural walls have been approved and bids are being gathered. Work should be completed in 2018. A new slide will be installed in the pool’s deep end this year as well.
This spring, a much-needed roof on the women’s bathhouse side of the building was completed.
Camp Splash open
Camp Splash, a seven-week day camp started June 18 and continues through Aug. 3.
There is still space available for this normally sold-out summer camp. This is a fun, active day camp with activities starting at 8:15 a.m. with a catered lunch by Krency Caterers and three hours of swimming in the afternoon.
The main building floors have been refurbished so indoor activities can keep our campers active during any rain days.

Softball sign-ups
Canon-Mac Youth Girls Softball Association will begin fall season sign ups in July for those ages 4-16 years old. Both fast and slow pitch teams will be formed if there are enough athletes signed up per respective age group.

More renovations planned
Renovations to other park amenities are being prioritized and funding is being pursued. We are writing and submitting for matching grants through the various agencies available, such as DCNR and DCED. Playgrounds, pathways and walking trails, parking lots and drainage culverts, tree replacement and a new pavilion are all being submitted as part of several grant applications, as well as ADA improvements for accessibility to all. The main water fountain and steps are going to be one of the first projects rehabilitated and plans to replace the BPW Pavilion are on the drawing board.
We are working with an arborist to replace the ash trees and older trees throughout the park. As many of you know, we’ve lost a lot of trees over the past several years. While replacing trees with ones that are best suited for our environment, we are also looking to add some color and sound barrier amenities to our project, especially around the basketball court.
Next year, we are going to implement a “grand entrance” to Town Park, with road maps to the numerous activities and locations throughout the park. We are looking for volunteers to help us with the design and implementation of this huge project.
New Park Board members are working to get the word out. Social media and e-newsletters will help secure our park as a regional (55-acre) asset for all surrounding communities to enjoy.
The park board would like to start a volunteer group to help with gardening and clean up days two to three times a year. If interested, please message us on Facebook.
