The Pennsylvania Bavarian Oktoberfest, the place for “Beer, Brats and Bands,” will mark its 20th year Sept. 14, 15 and 16 in Canonsburg.
The festival began as a joint fundraiser for the Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce and ARC in the small parking lot adjacent to the Canonsburg Borough building. It has expanded each year since then, adding rides, crafters, additional food vendors, a second stage of entertainment and fireworks. Shortly after the inception of the Canonsburg event, DANK (Deutsch Amerikanischer National Kongress) decided to become a part of the festivities. ARC eventually ended its participation in the event.
The Pennsylvania Bavarian Oktoberfest has become the single largest fundraising event that the Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce hosts each year and attendance is well over 60,000 people. It is now the sixth largest Oktoberfest in the United States.
The committee, under the leadership of Chamber of Commerce President Lexy Kusturiss, has worked diligently to provide another stellar event in 2018. Once again, there will be two entertainment stages with both German Bands and contemporary music. And Herman Helay, an accordion player who has participated in all 20 Oktberfests, will again be strolling through the streets.
The Oktoberfest also includes many crafters, beer and food vendors and amusement rides and games for children. Fireworks, presented by Jeffrey’s Drug Store, will be Sept. 15 at 9 p.m.
Hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Sept. 14, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 15 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 16.
